The warnings attached to many instructions inject a hint of danger, just enough to make the treasure hunter feel he’s bravely facing risks. When entering the ‘grotto of the great jinn of Helwan’, he’s cautioned to ‘wait for the emanations to dissipate.’190 Elsewhere he is advised to steer clear of a column of gold in the centre of an underground room, ‘I pray you, my son, for the love of god the adored, do not go near it or you will perish of poison!’ Another entry says to watch out for mechanical lions, and provides tips for disabling them. Treacherous companions could be worse than supernatural misadventures, judging by the number of warnings against them:
